Marking 40 years of the Pell Grants — In partnership with

The advent of 2012 marks the 40th anniversary of the Pell Grants. Senator Claiborne Pell (D-RI), who served in the U.S. Senate from 1961 to 1997, was the principal sponsor of the federal Basic Educational Opportunity Grant which was renamed the Pell Grants in 1980 in his honor.

The Pell Institute explores the impact of the Pell Grants after 40 Years in the following publication and series of convenings:

Reflections on Pell — Championing Social Justice through 40 Years of Educational Opportunity

  • An informative and practical resource handbook that will provide both data and anecdotal-based information to enable policymakers and college and university administrators to make more informed decisions about effectively legislating and implementing the Pell Grant program.

The PG40 Impact Initiative Convenings

  • 29th Annual SFARN Conference on June 13-17, 2012. This special, commemorative conference will include a dinner (.pdf) and presentations focused specifically on research about the Pell Grant's impact.

  • Pell Grant Legacy Awards Luncheon which is being hosted by the Council for Opportunity in Education during its 31st Annual Conference, September 7, 2012, in New York. The awards will honor current and past Pell Grant recipients who have made distinguished contributions to society.

  • The PG40 Impact Initiative Hill Briefings for Congressional, U.S. Department of Education, White House education staff and other higher education thought partners, Fall of 2012 and Spring of 2013.
